Abstract

This study aims to explore the economic and social conditions of irregular migrants in Libya through a field investigation conducted on a group of migrants in the transit area of Bani Walid. The researcher adopted a descriptive–analytical approach and selected a sample consisting of eighteen cases from various nationalities, using a structured interview as the main tool for data collection.

The study revealed that the main drivers of irregular migration include economic factors and armed conflicts in Sudan, in addition to Libya’s geographical proximity to migration routes, political division, weak security institutions, and the migrants’ ability to adapt to conditions within Libya—particularly those coming from neighboring countries.

The study recommended adopting a sponsorship (kafala) system and developing a unified national strategy to combat irregular migration, ensuring better regulation of migrant movements and protection of their human rights.
