Abstract

This research paper examines the escalating phenomenon of irregular migration in Libya, focusing on its serious social and demographic consequences. It analyses the social and demographic characteristics of migrants and the factors that drive them to migrate to Libya. The study highlights the impact of irregular migration on Libya's age and gender composition, contributing to social instability and demographic shifts. The paper explores attempts to resettle migrants and presents future scenarios for addressing the demographic and social repercussions. It also examines the tension between economic dependence on migrant labour and widespread public rejection, fuelled by concerns related to identity, security, and culture. The findings underscore the urgent need for state intervention and the development of comprehensive strategies to balance economic necessities with social cohesion and security, thereby ensuring social stability and future development in Libya.
